Certificate in Leading Integrated Health Systems (Hybrid)

The Leading Integrated Health Systems Certificate addresses the need for advanced management education for clinical and administrative professionals in integrated health systems. Integrated delivery systems combine hospitals and physician practices in one organization and are created in response to financial pressures and strategic opportunities.

U.S. healthcare providers are under significant pressure to consolidate — the likely result is more complex, integrated systems of care. Integrated delivery systems will drive innovation, strategy, incentives, and financing arrangements within healthcare. Administrators and practitioners will need to develop their abilities to lead in these new systems of care.

This program is intended for individuals — especially executives, physicians and other healthcare professionals — who are moving into leadership positions at their healthcare organization. The program includes advanced courses on both the management of complex, integrated health systems and the expanded role of physicians as providers, managers and leaders in those systems.

Program Outcomes

Students in the certificate are expected to master skills in leadership in integrated systems, organizational design, managing the embedded medical practice, strategy and financial analysis in healthcare organizations.  For clinical professionals and others working in the integrated systems, these skills are critical to the development of their careers and to their mobility within their organization and the field.  Specific benefits expected to accrue to those who complete the course include the following:

  • Enhanced ability to lead in integrated systems.
  • Expanded ability to make decisions about the most efficient use of resources.
  • Abilities in designing integrated systems.
  • Better grasp of strategy, finance and other system-wide perspectives in integrated systems, and accompanying ability to better participate in strategic decision-making in the organization.
  • Deeper understanding of issues in quality and safety in integrated systems.
  • Larger conceptual framework on which to base learning and other developmental activities in the future.

Hybrid Model

The University of Minnesota developed the first distance education program in healthcare administration more than 40 years ago.  Carrying that tradition forward, the Leading Integrated Systems Certificate combines online, experiential and on-campus learning opportunities. The coursework for the Certificate is offered online, and students can complete the program in 9 months.  Face-to-face classroom time is limited to seven days in August and four days in May.
